Progress on the Burnham Block, Chapter 4 – June 9, 2026

I had an unexpected chance to again visit the site of the restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright’s American System-Built Model C3 house on the Burnham Block in Milwaukee last week. The windows have been boarded up since my visit only a couple of weeks earlier, and I had a chance to see the basement. My last post, from May 28, also has links to the first two updates, beginning in November:

Restoration of the Frank Lloyd Wright – designed Model C3 American System-Built house at 1835 N. Layton Ave. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, continues Tuesday June 9, 2026. The general contractor is Camosy Construction from Kenosha. / Photos © Mark Hertzberg
Knob and tube wiring is visible on the west side of the house.
The living room…the windows face east onto N. Layton Blvd.
This was my first time in the full basement.
This is the roof above the porch.
This is the east side of the house. The windows closest to the camera are the living room windows; behind them one can see boards covering what will be the open space above the half wall on the porch, which was fully enclosed at some point in the life of the house, likely in the 1960s or 1970s when the stone veneer was put on top of the original stucco, and the Pizza Hut restaurant roof was installed (really!).
The American System-Built Model B1 house at 2714 W. Burnham Street, shown in the background, was the first restoration project undertaken by what is now Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block. That was in 2004.

  1. Very cool to see this home being restored. I toured the restored home next door during an Open Doors Milwaukee weekend a few years ago which also include a privately owned duplex a couple doors down. Looking forward to seeing this one finished.
