Progress on the Burnham Block – Chapter 5, October 15, 2026

It has been four months since our last visit to the restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Model C3 American System-Built house at 1835 N. Layton Blvd. in Milwaukee. I have had the opportunity to update my documentation of the project twice this week. A link to previous photos and updates is at: https://wrightinracine.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=8076&action=edit

Significant work being done this week includes: Finishing installation of trim pieces on the open porch, which had been enclosed during a remodeling in the 1970s; painting trim pieces around the house; building a new trellis; and delivery of refurbished kitchen windows. The house is part of “The Burnham Block,” which has two single family American System-Built homes and four American System-Built duplexes.

New cedar shingles are on the roof. The house has derisively been called the “Pizza Hut House” because a mansard roof from a Pizza Hut was put on the house about 50 years ago.

I leave you with two photos sent to me by Sybil Knop of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Burnham Block. The Block was part of Milwaukee’s recent Doors Open event. Visitors were allowed to sign roof shingles in exchange for a contribution to the restoration project. More than $1400 was raised as more than 100 shingles were signed.

Coming soon: The American System-Built homes in Milwaukee also included the Munkwitz Apartments which were demolished in 1973 because the City of Milwaukee wanted a right turn lane at 27th Street and Highland Avenue. Robert Hartmann photographed the apartments. Last Saturday I photographed Hartmann holding his photo at the spot that he took it from. The iron is that a few years ago the right turn lane was blocked off in a traffic-calming measure. Photos to come!
